First Hand Account
It was so early that I don’t think the day truly started until I had my first coffee. We flew into Auckland and then headed south to Hampton Downs Motorsport Park, about 45 minutes from the airport. I was tired but excited, and by the time lunch rolled around, I was content with a full stomach and a growing sense of anticipation.
The weather, however, was even more excited than I was. Rain came and went in heavy bursts, giving the Hampton Downs circuit a glossy slickness that looked beautiful, but also hinted at the challenging conditions we’d soon be driving in.
We were split into small teams, each assigned a couple of professional racing drivers. I landed in the Green Team, where I quickly made some good friends — one of whom would become my co‑pilot and primary driver partner for much of the day.
The Experience Line-up
After a short briefing, we headed straight out to the cars. We rotated through various CUPRA models, and I chose to let my newly made friend take the wheel first.
He seemed far more confident at the idea of pushing a car hard around a wet track than I was at that point.
Luckily, as the day progressed, the weather briefly improved and the track began to dry, allowing us to carry more speed through the corners.
We took turns driving, always following instructions from our assigned instructor via radio. Their guidance helped build confidence quickly, and before long we were attacking corners harder than I ever expected.
Every CUPRA we drove handled the track beautifully. The sound, grip, and composure were incredible — to me, they felt like full‑blown racing cars. I couldn’t believe how much speed they could carry through corners while still feeling stable and controlled.
Next up were the slalom laps. We were instructed to weave through a set of cones, turn around, and sprint back to set the fastest possible time. The energy was high as we cheered each other on. When it was my turn, my sleep‑deprived brain kicked in and I completely missed the first cone — whoops!
Thankfully, we were given a second attempt. This time I cleaned it up, and the instructor congratulated me, saying I’d more than made up for the first run and had gotten a good time. The CUPRA handled everything I threw at it better than I could have hoped — turn the wheel sharply and it simply obeyed. Despite the slick track (the rain had returned yet again), it was astonishing how capable the car was, especially considering the one I was using for this was a mid‑size SUV.
After that, we moved on to straight‑line acceleration tests in a drag‑strip setup.
The adrenaline was flowing, and I wanted to nail my timing. I was lucky enough to be in one of the CUPRA EVs, and the take‑off was instantaneous.
The acceleration was brutal — and then, almost immediately, it was time to stomp on the brakes.
We followed that with runs in the ICE CUPRAs. While they weren’t quite as explosive off the line, they made up for it with sound and sensation. Everything about them screamed performance.
Then came the skid pan — my personal favourite.
We climbed into the CUPRA wagons and let the professional drivers slide us around on the wet concrete, swinging left to right in long, controlled drifts.
It was pure fun and a great demonstration of just how balanced these cars can be.
Finally, it was time for the most intense part of the day: the hot lap. After another briefing, we were handed proper crash helmets — which only added to the excitement.
This felt serious now. I was placed into a car with people from another group, and our driver wasted no time.
The moment we rolled out, adrenaline hit hard — followed immediately by a huge smile.
The G‑forces were intense as the car was pushed close to its limits, even with the rain forcing the drivers to leave a small margin. You could feel the tyres momentarily losing traction through corners, but the driver handled it effortlessly, calmly talking to us as if it were nothing.
That marked the end of the day. We congratulated the winners of the slalom challenge, said goodbye to new friends, and headed home.
Overall, it was an incredible experience and absolutely worth it.
Feeling just how capable these CUPRAs truly are as performance vehicles was unforgettable. The visceral sensation of driving them is something that really has to be experienced to be understood.
