The Origins of the CUPRA Tavascan

The Origins of the CUPRA Tavascan

Not far from the French/Spanish border lies the Spanish village of Tavascan, nestled in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains. It’s a place known for its raw beauty, innovation, and harmony with nature, and as you might have guessed already, a source of profound inspiration for CUPRA’s boldest project to date – the all-electric Tavascan SUV coupe.

Power in its Purest Form

The village of Tavascan is home to one of the most unconventional hydroelectric power plants in the region. Located 500 metres deep inside the Pic de Guerón mountain, it draws from one of Europe’s most significant waterfalls. First opened in 1974, the plan took over 20 years to complete and has produced over 7 million MWh of clean energy and continues to power the region with emission-free energy.

Its reversible design, the first of its kind in Spain, is a feat of sustainable engineering. By day, it channels water from the lakes to generate electricity; by night, it reverses the process, pumping water back up to the upper lakes, ready to be used again. Innovation and circular energy, core values that are shared with CUPRA.

Design Rooted in Nature

Just like the village, the CUPRA Tavascan is built on a foundation of sustainability and integrity. The surrounding homes in Tavascan blend into the environment, constructed from local stone and timber, raw materials that mirror the SUV’s own design DNA.

The Tavascan is CUPRA’s first all-electric SUV coupe, with 250 kW output and a mission to reimagine what electrification can be. From concept to road, it’s a vehicle with purpose, not only powered by electricity, but shaped by it.

“The aim was to give the model genuine integrity, with raw materials, colours, textures, and graphic elements that grant it sophistication in tune with nature,” says Francesca Sangalli, Head of Colour and Trim Concept and Strategy at CUPRA.

A Shared Vision

At the core of both village and vehicle lies a sustainable spirit. Tavascan’s hydroelectric legacy has proven what’s possible with renewable energy. Now, the CUPRA Tavascan builds on that legacy, driving forward into a new era of emotion-led electrification.

“It enables us to create a lighter structure and showcase the parts for what they are, without covering them up, helping us reduce our carbon footprint,” as Sangalli states.

In many ways, the CUPRA Tavascan is not just named after the village; it’s shaped by it.

The CUPRA Tavascan will be coming to Christchurch on a roadshow tour of New Zealand soon, prior to its official launch. Register your interest to receive more details and find full specifications here.
